Inevitable question: why?

It has been a very turbulent time for the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda, with pain and destruction on such an enormous scale many struggle to comprehend and cannot help but ask the inevitable question: WHY?

Being in Manila and far from the badly affected areas, it is easy for me to take the time and try to make sense of why these things happen. After thinking long and hard, I have come to the truth that I do not understand and maybe that is really how it is supposed to be.

A friend shared this to me…

Shakespeare said ‘ There are more things in heaven and earth, than are dreamt of in your philosophy’.  It is true; for thousands of years the greatest minds have analysed  and constructed theories based on their understanding of religious texts and what the prophets really meant when they said or performed an action, but eventually one must come to the conclusion that these are ethical guidelines for us to follow, examples on how we should conduct ourselves and how we should interact with each other they do not reveal all of the secrets, they do not tell us why Allah creates or destroys this is His knowledge alone.

There are two things that we can do in this kind of situation: to acknowledge Allah and to find solace in Allah. Allah is Al Rahman. Even if we struggle to understand the reasons behind certain events in this world, we must remember that everything He does is a mercy, and one day Insha’ala, when our Taqwa and Iman are strongest, we will understand.

May Allah have mercy on the departed and gives strength to those who are left behind. Ameen.
